Hello, I am Sofia Luce, a Senior Mechanical Engineering Student at Boston University.
Although I love engineering, there are many things I enjoy doing in my free time!

I am curious about everything, including other people, cultures, art, and nature. This curiosity is what drives most of the things I do. In my opinion, it is always fun to try new things – whether that be new food, new clothes, or a new country.
My curiosity is also what drives my desire to be an engineer; I always want to know how things work! I love being able to look at the world around me and understand how it works, while still holding a sense of wonder about the complexity of it all.
I love language and traveling. I spent my formative childhood years in the Czech Republic. Growing up in such a different environment has given me an appreciation for all things language and culture.

Living in the US, I have developed a love for the Spanish language and have tried very hard to learn it. When I came to BU and had the opportunity to go abroad to Madrid, I knew I had to take it.
I spent 4 months in Madrid living with a Spanish host family. I was able to improve my language skills and travel all over Spain and Europe. I had the very special experience of visiting Prague again and seeing the places I frequented as a child. It was such a wonderful adventure.
Although I cannot claim fluency in Spanish, I can hold a conversation about most topics. I am so glad to have the ability to communicate with so many more people. Being able to have conversations with people who experience such different lives from our own is something I love doing.
I also love being out in nature, so I love to spend the warm summer months hiking and the cold winter months skiing.
My favorite mountain to ski is Sunday River in Maine, but any chance to ski is a good one (even on other mountains).
I have been skiing since I was four years old.
I also love to hike. This summer I hiked 13 mountains in the White Mountain range in New Hampshire.
The biggest trip was an overnight backpacking trip with my parents where we hiked 7 peaks – which was 22 miles total. All with a 30 lb pack on my back!

While at school, I am the vice president for my synchronized swimming club team.
I was a competitive swimmer my whole childhood, and I transitioned to synchronized swimming in college. I love being able to have fun in the water with my friends while also getting a killer workout.
This year we traveled to Ypsilanti, Michigan to attend Nationals. I was able to place as part of my trio routine, and it was a great experience to compete with such talented swimmers and watch their amazing routines.

In addition to everything else, I am also a musician and an artist. I have been playing piano for 13 years and it is something that brings me a lot of peace. I enjoy being able to share emotions with people through my playing.
I have also dabbled in most kinds of art. I have tried painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, etc. and I love all of it. In high school I had some of my art displayed in the local arts center, and now in college, I have the much less impressive claim of drinking out of a mug that I made.
Shown on the left is a poster I illustrated digitally for an oceanography class I took last year.
Art and music are outlets for me that also bring emotion to other people, so I enjoy being able to share with the world in that way.
